Next storm system arrives Friday with chance of snow, colder temperatures

The Nebraska State Patrol has issued a warning to drivers traveling on the Interstate 80 Thursday and Friday.

Drivers should expect the roads to be impacted with hard driving conditions and road closures around the state. The storm will be accompanied by strong winds and plummeting temperatures. Rain was expected to change to a wintry mix or snow in the Lexington-to-Ord area sometime around 2 a.m. Rain and possibly snow move in Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

By Thursday night, however, temperatures will start to fall and all rain that fell through the day will freeze which could lead to some treacherous travel for at least the first part of Friday.

Wednesday also marked the fifth day of a government shutdown over a budget dispute between Trump and congressional Democrats. Trump has previously said he had a legitimate bone-spur diagnosis, though he has never provided any documentation.

The heaviest snowfall is expected along and west of the Red River Valley, where blizzard conditions are expected Thursday.

Looking at forecasting models, the weather service said the most likely scenario puts about 10 inches of snow in Brainerd with more snow falling just to the north and east.

Once the fog lifts, Christmas will be the best day for traveling this week.

Cold weather settles in, with highs in the 20s and overnight lows in the teens and single digits.
