White House Targets Pelosi Even After Trump's 'Proud' Shutdown Vow

President Donald Trump on Sunday pinned the recent deaths of two migrant children on the southern USA border on his usual political foe, the Democrats, along with what he called "their pathetic immigration policies".

"Either we build (finish) the Wall or we close the Border ..." one of Trump's four tweets about the border said in part.

Trump's demand for money to build the border wall and Democrats' refusal to give him what he wants has caused a partial government shutdown that is almost a week old.

Several senior Democratic congressional aides contacted Thursday evening were taken aback by the White House's contention that it put new talks on the table before the House and Senate announced plans to essentially punt any resolution to the partial shutdown into next year.

About 25 percent of the federal government has been shut down since December 21, with roughly 800,000 workers affected, including an estimated 350,000 who are on furlough at home.

Pelosi has all but locked up the support she needs to win the gavel on January 3 and there is also no sign of daylight between her and Schumer in the negotiations over government funding.

Mulvaney said Trump is willing to shut down the border, despite the economic hit as $558 billion worth of goods flowed across the border previous year, because "all options are on the table" and "it's the only way we can get the Democrats' attention".

"Thank you to Sean Parnell for the nice comments on @foxandfriends about the troops wonderful reaction to Melania and I in Iraq and Germany".

President Donald Trump and Democrats are trading blame for the partial government shutdown.

Mulvaney said Schumer was "really interested in doing a deal and coming to some sort of compromise" but he understood that Pelosi was at risk of losing the speakership of the House if she went along.

Democrats brushed off the White House's attempt to cast blame. While the U.S. Department of Homeland Security says the father told them he had not been able to give his daughter food or water for "days", the family has called for an "objective and thorough investigation" into the incident. "And the president must exercise the decorum expected from the White House - even from his Twitter account".

Hammill said 'given that the President has changed his position so many times, we would not consider any offers from the White House that the President has not publicly endorsed.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Pence proposed spending $2.5 billion on border security, including the wall, in a stopgap spending bill during his Friday and Saturday meetings with Schumer on Capitol Hill last week.

U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-McAllen, responded to the president's tweets via a prepared statement and did not address the threat to cut off aid to Central American countries.

Trump also said the US would cut off all aid to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador for "taking advantage of (the) USA for years!"

He's made similar threats in the past without following through, and it is Congress, not the president, that appropriates aid money. "We take great care of the relationship with the government of the United States", Lopez Obrador said.
