Hanover airport on lockdown after 'car drove through barrier on the runway'

Police say a judge has ordered the continued detention of a young Polish man who forced open a locked perimeter gate at Germany's Hannover Airport and drove his auto onto the airfield.

Hannover police said on Twitter that officers stopped the auto and overwhelmed the man. While the terminal area remained open, however, a police statement from the local force claimed that the security areas were "currently vacated".

Hanover police said the driver had tested positive for cocaine and amphetamines.

Officials have not said whether they're treating the incident as terror related.

Flights were delayed and diverted as a result of the incident closing the airport.

At the appeal hearing, prosecutors argued Schellenberg was likely to part of a worldwide drugs smuggling operation. Global Affairs Canada Department confirmed that their citizen had been released, but did not name the person.

Air traffic at the airport was paralyzed for more than four hours. The incident originally unfolded at around 1530 local time, and the airport said that flights resumed at 2006.

According to Eurocontrol, the airport remains closed until approximately 22:00 UTC.

Bomb disposal experts were examining the vehicle, which police described as a routine measure.
