Congressional Leaders Get Briefing On Border As Impacts Of Partial Shutdown Grow

As a result of their victory in November's mid-term elections, Democrats will take over leadership of all House committees. "We need to know who's in our communities that shouldn't be".

As long as House Democrats stick to their guns, is hard to see a graceful exit strategy for Trump and Senate Republicans.

But first, they'll have to get government reopened from the partial shutdown.

Trump said he was open to working on a path to legal status for hundreds of thousands of young illegal immigrants known as Dreamers, pointing toward a potential broader deal with Democrats that could resolve the shutdown. Whether or not Republicans choose to challenge Trump will matter greatly, but the main event will play out on the Democratic side, where dozens of candidates are lining up to compete.

Yet as the shutdown moves through its 10th day, it is clear that the House Democrats' plan to take the first legislative action since the start of the shuttering of roughly a quarter of the federal government remains a nonstarter for Republicans, who still control the chamber on the other side of the US Capitol.

If there is one accomplishment for which we can confidently credit President Donald Trump, it is ending the country's political apathy.

Jeffries said that while Trump wants to "waste millions in taxpayer dollars on a medieval border wall", Democrats are drawing "a line in the stand" against the spending they say won't make the border any safer.

Even if only symbolic, the passage of the bills in the House would put fresh pressure on the President. The location means the conversation will not be televised, unlike the volatile sitdown during which Democratic leaders talked back to Trump last month. Senate Republicans are reluctant to consider the House bills unless they know the president is on board.

The briefing with congressional leaders is taking place one day before Democrats assume control of the House and end the Republican monopoly on the Government.

After Democrats won the House in 2018, Pelosi became poised to challenge President Donald Trump and Republicans on a number of high-profile issues like immigration and the Russian Federation investigation.

"We are giving the Republicans the opportunity to take yes for an answer", she wrote in a letter to colleagues. Trump could actually make this worse by offering something like a DACA deal and daring Democrats to reject it.

Trump said he is willing to keep the government shut down for "as long as it takes", noting it "could be a long time".
