The Adam Levine-fronted band appeared halfway through the big game, kicking things off with a medley of its biggest hits, "Harder to Breathe" and "This Love". In fact, people on Twitter are making it known that they wish Spongebob was the headliner instead of Maroon 5, who also performed with with Scott and later Big Boi.

While the Patriots and the Rams were locked up at 3 points to 0, many looked to the halftime show like Marie Kondo looks to well-folded linen: They were searching for something to bring them joy.

They introduced Scott with a clip from "Sweet Victory", a 2001 episode where the sponge performs at the Bubble Bowl, Bikini Bottom's version of the Super Bowl. We nearly had something there. He has been without a team since he started kneeling during the pre-game performance of the U.S. national anthem in protest against alleged police brutality against minorities. "This is not a victory for the NFL, it is a defeat, you have denied football fans everywhere the pleasure and the honor of watching one of the greatest quarterbacks who ever played the game, and you have shown your true colors".

Levine said during the interview the public reaction hasn't affected his and the band's preparations too much. "I am not in the right profession if I can't handle a bit of controversy".
