Whitaker: I have 'not interfered' with Mueller investigation

There was some curious timing regarding a letter from Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker to the House Judiciary Committee.

In an unheard of move for a witness at a congressional hearing, Whitaker tried to chastise him when he asked if he had ever approved any request from Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Whitaker and Nadler then clashed when the witness informed the chair his five-minute time limit to ask questions had run out. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., about the conditions under which he would testify. Since the leadership of the House changed hands in December, he has emerged as one of the Trump administration's most powerful foes on Capitol Hill.

Mr Whitaker is due to be replaced by William Barr after a Senate confirmation hearing in the coming weeks.

But Nadler, who a day earlier had threatened to subpoena Mr Whitaker to ensure his appearance, left no doubt about his party's focus.

Whitaker on learning of Roger Stone indictment before it became public: "I have, again, been briefed on the special counsel's investigation". Nadler reminded Whitaker that the committee had submitted questions relating to the special counsel investigation and was waiting on answers. They also plan to ask questions about Whitaker's past businesses and his decision-making at the department since his appointment by President Trump in November.

CNN's Brooke Baldwin spoke with him and said as they were watching, he said Whitaker "was playing way out of his league".

"While DOJ claims that Whitaker made no promises to Trump about undermining the Mueller investigation, there were published reports that Trump asked Whitaker to control the prosecutors in the Southern District of NY", he explained. Nadler said that as late as last week the committee had received reports that some at the department were counseling Whitaker not to appear. "The question that this committee must now ask is: Why?"

Answering questions from Nadler, Whitaker said he hasn't spoken with Mr. Trump or senior White House officials about the Mueller probe.

On Thursday, Mr Burr told CBS News: "If we write a report based upon the facts that we have, then we don't have anything that would suggest there was collusion by the Trump campaign and Russian Federation".

However, Boyd added, Whitaker can not divulge details of his confidential discussions with Trump because certain communications are "vital to a president's ability to discharge the responsibilities of his office".
