Why aren't Democrats calling on Justin Fairfax to resign?

"I'm willing to talk to anybody about honest conversations about how we move forward", said Del. Abrams's historic candidacy-she would have been the first black female governor in USA history-and the contention over the campaign-she insists Kemp suppressed votes although the race had high turnout-made it one of the most watched races in 2018.

Mr Herring, 57, went public after rumours of a blackface photo of him had circulated at the Capitol for a day or more.

To make matters more dismal, Vanessa Tyson, the woman who has accused Fairfax of sexual assault, released a compelling and lengthy statement describing - in detail - her 2004 encounter with Fairfax, forcing the Democrat to once again deny her accusations. "I have never done anything like what she suggests", Fairfax said in a statement.

Elected officials in both parties have recently seen their careers ended by allegations of racism and sexual misconduct.

"Democrats have not learned the wrong lessons from Trump, and I'm glad about that". Tyson emailed Virginia Democratic Congressman Bobby Scott on October 20, 2017, letting him know that she was "not a fan" of Fairfax.

Complicating the matter are scandals now confronting two people in line to take Virginia's governorship if Northam resigns. Fairfax denied the allegation, and claimed that his encounter with the woman had been consensual.

"Allegations of sexual assault need to be taken seriously", Scott told ABC News.

Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams wouldn't call on the embattled trio of Virginia Democrats to resign in an interview Thursday, saying they should take "responsibility for their decisions".

The string of scandals that began when the yearbook picture came to light last Friday could have a domino effect on Virginia state government: If all three top Democrats fall, House Speaker Kirk Cox, a conservative Republican, would command the state.

Racial discrimination is more explicit in Virginia, which grapples with a legacy of slavery and white supremacy, but it also exists - in a more subtle form - in Oregon, Brown said.

"I think there's a rightful hesitation about removal from office because, obviously, you have to consider that to some degree you're overturning an election", the Times-Dispatch quoted Cox as saying Monday. This is moving way too quickly. Republican House majority leader Todd Gilbert said it would be "reckless" to comment.

In his initial apology, Northam, a pediatric neurologist, said that the photo does not represent who he is now.

Democrats have expressed fear that the uproar over the governor could jeopardize their chances of taking control of the GOP-dominated Virginia legislature this year.

Scott, however, is not calling for Fairfax to step down and it is unclear what, if anything, he did with the information his friend gave him.

Democrat Hillary Clinton carried Virginia in the 2016 presidential election.

Herring came down hard on Northam when the yearbook photo surfaced, condemning it as "indefensible", and "profoundly offensive".

Meanwhile, the Rev. Al Sharpton said in a fiery speech at historically black Virginia Union University that Northam and Herring must step down over their blackface admissions, and the allegations against Fairfax should be investigated thoroughly.

He said he and two friends dressed up to look like rappers they listened to, including Kurtis Blow, admitting: "It sounds ridiculous even now writing it".

"That conduct clearly shows that, as a young man, I had a callous and inexcusable lack of awareness and insensitivity to the pain my behavior could inflict on others", he said.

"This conduct is in no way reflective of the man I have become in the almost 40 years since", he said.
