Inside the Supermax Prison Where El Chapo Will Be Housed

Guzman, one of the major figures in Mexican drug wars that have roiled the country since 2006, become nearly legendary for escaping from Mexican high-security jails twice and avoiding massive manhunts.

Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D., Ill.) suggested Wednesday he was open to using money seized from convicted Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman to pay for the appropriations package recently agreed to by congressional negotiators.

Reintroduced by Cruz on January 3, the Ensuring Lawful Collection of Hidden Assets to Provide Order (El Chapo) Act would ensure all money forfeited to the U.S. government from the criminal prosecutions of Guzman and other drugs lords be used for the construction of a wall on the southern U.S. -Mexico border as well as other "border security assets".

Dubbed the "Alcatraz of the Rockies" after the prison in San Francisco that held the notorious gangster Al Capone and other criminals, the Administrative Maximum Facility (ADX) in Florence, Colorado, was built to house the most risky inmates.

Even when Guzman was recaptured in 2016 before his extradition to the United States, he was plotting another escape, prosecutor Andrea Goldbarg said in closing arguments.

Guzman broke out of Mexican prisons twice - once using a mile-long secret tunnel - before he was recaptured and extradited to the United States in 2017. One former prisoner, in an interview with The Boston Globe, described the lockup as a "high-tech version of hell, created to shut down all sensory perception".

ADX inmate Mahmud Abouhalima, who was involved in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, described life in his cell on Cell Block H in the supermax jail, according to Boston.com.

Human interaction is minimal.

The facility is guarded by razor-wire fences, gun towers, heavily armed patrols and attack dogs.

U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue called the conviction "a victory for the American people who suffered so much" while the defendant poured poison over the borders.

Guzman's confinement leading up to his three-month trial included remarkable security measures. USA marshals escorted them daily between their homes and the federal courthouse in Brooklyn. Officials were so concerned about security, in fact, that Guzman was forbidden from hugging his wife at his trial.

That would not be a problem at Florence, where all visits are non-contact, and prisoners are separated from their visitors by a thick plexiglass screen.
