That's the big takeaway from the opening weekend of "Captain Marvel", the studio's first comic-book movie to put the spotlight on a female heroine.

It did that and then some.

Globally, "Captain Marvel" grossed a combined $455 million - the sixth-best opening ever before adjusting for inflation.

Captain Marvel hit screens on March 8. Not only did the movie have the largest worldwide opening for a female-led film, it had the second-largest worldwide opening for any superhero film behind Avengers: Infinity War.

The record-breaking debut debunked the myth that a solo female superhero couldn't reliably open a film - a foundation of success laid by "Wonder Woman" and now solidified by "Captain Marvel".

The box office bounty gives "Captain Marvel" the biggest opening of 2019 so far and signals a rebound for theater owners, whose sales are down 26% year-to-date.

"She definitely pushed us higher, further, faster", said Disney distribution chief Cathleen Taff.

Earlier, Larson had even jumped behind the candy bar, serving up popcorn and soda like a hero. The film takes place in 1995 after all, so for audiences who aren't necessarily diehard Marvel fans, there's still plenty there for them to sink their teeth into. "And hopefully it'll be the movie that you want to revisit again and again, and as life goes on, it'll have more to it".

In "Captain Marvel's" case, timing isn't everything, but it certainly does help.
