Former House Speaker Paul Ryan has joined the board of Fox Corp., the media company that begins its new life Tuesday after Rupert Murdoch sold much of his empire to Walt Disney Co. a year ago. Disney announced in 2017 that it was purchasing many parts of 21st Century Fox for $52.4 billion in stock.

Now that Fox Corp. has sold off most of its entertainment properties, it has become a standalone company that will retain ownership of its broadcast network, owned-and-operated network affiliates, the Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network and Fox Sports. While Fox had from the start declared Disney to be their top pick for the deal, things were complicated when Comcast threw their potential buyer hat into the ring.

The acquisition clears the way for Disney to launch its money-spinning Disney+ streaming service, with a war-chest of lucrative shows to roll out with it.
