"Measles is a highly contagious illness that can be prevented with the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine", said DCHHS Medical Director Dr. Christopher Perkins.

The first of two routine childhood measles vaccine doses is given at 12-15 months of age.

A case of measles has been confirmed in Maryland, and authorities informed some Maryland residents that they may have been exposed. In addition, immune globulin (Ig) treatment is effective within six days of exposure for high-risk individuals. If your child is fully vaccinated with two doses, they will not require further booster vaccinations. The United States averaged about 60 cases of measles a year from 2000 to 2010, but the average number of cases jumped to 205 a year in recent years.

Measles symptoms typically develop 10-14 days after exposure to the virus but can develop as soon as seven days and as long as 21 days after exposure. IN had one confirmed measles case in 2018. It spreads down the back and trunk and then extends to the arms and hands, as well as the legs and feet.

Measles is highly contagious.

These are followed a few days later by a blotchy, red rash. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends two doses of the vaccine. The measles can spread easily in unvaccinated people through coughing and sneezing and secretions from the mouth. According to the CDC, numerous recent USA cases of measles have been linked to visits to Israel, Ukraine, and other countries where large outbreaks have occurred. Talk to your healthcare provider to determine if immune globulin is right for you and if it is available. Be prepared to describe your symptoms and alert your doctor if you think you have been in contact with an infected person.

The reasons for the increase in measles outbreaks is due, in part, to worldwide travel and a growing number of people who are opting not to have their children vaccinated against the disease and other communicable diseases.

If you do not receive a consent and/or information package for your child/children by May 2019 and believe that they are not up-to-date with their immunizations, please contact your local health unit.
